Halloween Costume Contest

Last night my girlfriend and I went to the local drag bar to participate in the Halloween Costume Contest.

You see I am a "Master" class costumer in the sci fi convention circuit and had at least three choices to wear to the event. After showing my gf all three we decided I would wear the costume I call Starlight dragon.

It is a costume I made in 2000 for a themed Masquarade contest at a Sci fi convention. The theme was of course the millineum. My friend and I who I costumed together at the time decided we would be the Millineum dragons, the story being that dragons met every millineum to meet for a grand ball. Her dragon was in purples and blacks and called the Midnight Dragon and mine is in blues and silver and thus called Starlight Dragon. We won for best workmanship and something else that I can't remember right now at that event.

Once deciding that I would be wearing said costume, I got out my extra rhinestones, etc and glue gun as the head piece is a dragon head and it needed to be gussied up after sitting for six years on a shelf. So I spent two hours sprucing up the dragon head and pulling all the pieces of the outfit together. That included the ball gown dress, which I made also, a wedding slip of yards and yards of crinoline etc, my courset, wings, and my "glass slippers".

I threw glitter over myself everywhere, did make up including false eyelashes and face jewels and put on the dress. The wings were carried in the back of the truck and I held the head in my lap on the way to the bar. Both were put on at the parking lot of the bar so I could make a grand entrance.

As we entered the bar I was given all kinds of thumbs up and positive comments. This continued for the time period we were there. Some of the questions were...."Were did you get your costume?" (I made it!) and from one drag queen "oooh I want it!"

We watched the show that was held before the contest and then I went on stage with some other folks. Now my sweetie had checked out the bar before hand and had declared me the winner. I can't remember all the contestants by my only "competition? " were a three person group dressed in Cat in the hat and the two things. Now when you see the pictures of my dress you will know why I said, "competition?" The only thing going for the other group were they were bar regulars and they had a lot of friends present. I on the other hand was only there with my gf and didn't know anyone else. The audience had to pick by applause and cheers. The other group had a lot of cheers but then I had more and I had people yelling out Starlight Princess, Starlight Princess!

I won!!! wow I have never won anything more than ribbons for my costumes..so I was quite happy!

This is the dragon head piece that I made, it took six months. The scales are hand cut and placed specialty paper. The base is a bicycle helmet with wire frame surrounded by plaster cast material. (Note to self...never, never use that material again god it is heavy!) It is covered in jewels, glitter, beads, and blue tinsel.

Here is a side view of the costume.

This is a window outside the bar I thought it was a gerat window to show off my costume.

At Trax, the bar, with Miss Amazing Grace the drag queen who annouced I had won.

2 am in the morning back at home, a happy winner!!!

This tuesday I am going to try for a trip to mexico at a local resturant with the same costume. Who knows I might win!
