A great summer weekend adventure (s)

I had a great weekend this weekend. It was the Lousters third bday party. They held it at Carkeek park. L's mom is in town and so we all went to the little get together.
Lou was more interested in getting some bday cake then opening presents. He kept saying, "I need cake!" LOL, the best part about turning three I guess is the cake.

I got Lou this pedal car for his birthday. I found it in one of my favorite shopping places. Ahem let's just say that I didn't spend what it is really worth. I love a good deal. I knew he would love it. He calls cars like this Rat Rods when he sees them on the road. So when I saw it I just knew it would be perfect, his own Rat Rod. The one I got him has a little side mirror and an ooga horn. (I am sure his parent's love that!)

I didn't take it to the party as I knew it would be a 2/3/4 year old brawl fest over who would get to ride in it. So I dropped it off on his porch. His parents found it after he went to bed and put it in their living room for him to discover in the morning. They said he ate breakfast in it. LOL

That afternoon L, her mom and I went to the Ballard seafood festival. We heard there was an eight dollar salmon feed and so we went to search for it. We found it and boy was it ever delish! Then we wandered until we could wander no more among the booths.

The next day we had decided on going to the San Juans, some islands a few hours away from Seattle. We choose the big Island of San Juan. The day started dismal and rainy but living in Seattle means never postponing an outing due to rain. (You would never go anywhere if you did)

We had meant to take the early ferry but discovered that we had misread the time. So we took the next ferry out of Anacortes. (It is about an hour and half ride north of Seattle)

This is a picture of the Anacortes ferry dock.

It was pretty cold on the ferry but it was a great ride. It has been along time since I had taken a ferry anywhere. However it was really cold and windy as it clipped along at an impressive speed over the water. Here are Les and I on the outside deck. Les' mom wisely chose to stay in the car.

Has we were sailing a long a great big sail boat passed by. I was lucky enough to get the pic at just the right time.

Once at Friday harbor we drove towards our destination, Lime Kiln Park. It has been a lime quarry at one time. Now it is a park where many go to see the orca's. We stopped once before we got there as we thought we had spotted a whale. However it was jus a log and a few seals who would poke their heads up everynow and then. I stopped to take a picture of a roadside butter cup before we left that area.
We arrived at the park just in time to hear the guides say that the orcas (killer whales) were headed toward the park. All of us tourist where on pins and needles as we waited to see if they would come through. The park guide said that sometimes they would change their minds and turn around.

We were rewarded with the sight of the whales as they went through the bay. I am not sure if you can see it in this picture but there is a whale fin just behind the kayak in the foreground. It was exciting. A baby orca breached (jumped up) twice in the water. The large male whale's fins where impressive.

Just before they started to come by we spotted a seal up close to the shore hanging out in the kelp. After seeing the size of those fins I am not surprised that a seal would swim a little closer to the safety of the shore!

Afterward we walked up to the light house. I took pictures as I usually do of things that I thought would make great pictures. These are a few of those "scenic" pictures here in the park.

Then we went to catch the ferry home and found that that ferry was full up. So we killed a few more hours in Friday Harbor while we waited for the later ferry. We grabbed a smoothie than hit the touristy shops. Finally it was time to board the ferry and go home after what was a spetacular day. The sun had come out and we had seen whales! I arrived home very late but very happy with our adventure.

I took this sunset picture on the ferry on our way home. A perfect ending to a perfect day.
